The carpets in the mosque, Istanbul

Description
I'm glad there are a few mosques which allow "infidels" to come inside to appreciate their grandeur, their peace and solitude, their glorious architecture, the chance to slow down and reflect in the middle of a busy city. I certainly didn't get even close when I was in Iran. As everyone else did at the great mosque of Sulayman, I washed myself at a fountain in the courtyard, removed my sandals, and then tried to be as unobtrusive as possible as I took a few quick, quiet pictures. I enjoyed sitting and meditating in the cool, dark tranquility of this serene, inspiring place far more than photographing it. Istanbul, 1976.
