Description Midnight Mass at St. James Cathedral is a grand and solemn celebration of the birth of Christ. People come at 5 p.m. to stake out prized pew positions for the midnight ceremonies, and if you show up at 11:00 p.m., an hour early--plenty of time, right?--you're out of luck. You may find standing room only, but more likely you'll be standing on the steps outside. The music is part of the attraction: St. James has one of the great music programs in the country. If pomp and orchestra and chorus are too much for you, try the sublime sounds of the Scola (women's choir) at the 5:30 Sunday evening Mass. Pretty close to heaven.
