Description
Relentless winds push south from Canada and buffet the rolling fields of north central North Dakota, redistributing piles and drifts of snow all winter long. In an area with little irrigation, you're a lucky farmer if this source of spring moisture stops on your property.
This photograph was taken on my grandfather's farm near Karlsruhe, North Dakota. Not having grown up on a farm, I'm amazed every time I visit the "homestead" at how vast--and how quiet--it is on the Great Plains. By late June the whole state will be lush and bursting with undulating green fields of wheat and rye and barley and flax, and the harsh winter will seem like a distant memory.
