Not having grown up on a farm, I'm amazed every time I visit the "homestead" at how vast--and how quiet--it is on the Great Plains. By late June the whole state will be lush and bursting with undulating green fields of wheat and rye and barley and flax, and the harsh winter will seem like a distant memory.
